A touch of winter magic with snowshoeing, northern lights and dogsledding

Winter break in Tankavaara gives you access to the magical forest of UKK National park by snowshoes, husky and snowmobile sledge. High value for a reasonable cost.

Tankavaara is the gate of the gold-mining area of Lapland in summer. In winter the trees in this area of Lapland get a heavy snow load, which makes the forest look magical both in daylight and in nighttime.

This family-run, small hotel and its nostalgic saloon type of restaurant is a great alternative to holiday resorts - tasty food, comfortable accommodation, and very friendly service. Location 400m from the main road makes it possible to arrive by bus from Rovaniemi and to get easily to Saariselkä ski village by bus. There is also a Gold museum you can visit in your freetime.

Activities included:

1) Northern lights Snowmobiling by sleigh

A guide will drive the snowmobile while you sit comfortably in a sleigh and can concentrate on observing the night sky.  You will drive through the winter forest to the Arctic hills. Midway you'll have hot juice and a snack by campfire in a cosy lean-to-shelter. Winter forest in Tankavaara is silent, there is no light pollution. If you are lucky, northern lights will show up.

2) Snowshoeing 2h daytime or night time depending on your arrival date

Light and an easy snowshoeing trip to the national park guided by a professional guide. Snacks by the fire included. The winter forest looks magical both in the blueish daylight and in night light. It is also possible to rent snowshoes for self-guided hikes.

3)  Saariselkä visit with a reindeer sleigh ride 2h and tobogganing 2h

Reindeer sledding is the traditional way to move from place to place used by the indigenous Sámi people. Let us take you on a peaceful reindeer ride to the wilderness. You will also learn more about reindeer and their unique lifestyle in the north.

After the slow ride, it is time to experience something faster. In Saariselkä there is a very long 1,6km long, lighted toboggan slope. You will get up by ski lift with a guide on the first ride and get down together.

4) Husky safari 10km

The most fun activities always take place on the last day. Nothing beats the feeling of mushing a team of huskies. Two people will share a team of dogs. Children under 12 years of age sit in the sledge of the guide. After basic instructions, you will start your safari through the snowy landscape.
